The webinar begins with an I.Lead conference 2024 logo and underneath it says Report Card Webinar: Education and training, Hayden shows up and begins speaking.
Hayden speaking:
“Kia ora my name is Hayden and I am a member of the Auckland I.Lead Committee, today I’ll be discussing the report cards from the I.Lead 2024 conference. One of the topics discussed was Education and Training. Education and Training is important to the development of all youth, however 64% of young people who attended the I.Lead 2024 conference were not in any form of education or training. This is more five time of New Zealand’s average NEET (not in education, employment, or training) rate. From the Education and Training report card we were able to come up with two recommendations from our young people.
The first recommendation is to deliver compulsory disability awareness and inclusion training for teachers including early childhood education. For this training to occur throughout all years of training, qualification and registration. This comes up as a key theme at all I.Lead conferences. Young people would like to see more training for teachers, currently the training is brief and sometimes it’s optional. Because of having an invisible disability my grades were often based off how understanding my teachers were of my disability and the areas I was struggling in.
The second recommendation was four key areas for the education sector to focus on.
1. The first key theme being bullying, due to bully it was physically unsafe for me to attend my last two terms of intermediate school, this affected my transition into high school.
2. The second key theme is to have support systems to help us learn and grow
3. The third theme is for education providers to craft a co-design partnership with disabled people
4. The fourth and final theme would be to invest in disability awareness training for education providers.
Thank you for watching this webinar on the Education and Training Report Card”
The webinar ends with the I.Lead conference 2024 logo again and underneath it says ‘Want to hear more about our findings from the conference? The rest of our report card webinars can be found at www.ilead.org.nz.’
Recommendation #1
Develop and deliver compulsory disability awareness and inclusion training for teaches (including ECE) that is more than one year and occurs throughout all years of training, qualification, and registration.
This comes up as a key theme each I.Lead conference. Young people would like to see more training for the teachers, currently the training is brief and sometimes optional.
Roadblocks: Lack of education and training provided to the education system on both visible and invisible disabilities. Limited intake by the teaching profession to develop a co-design process with young disabled people
Enablers: The development of national and regional advisory groups that provide disability specific advice to the Ministry of Education.
Recommendation #2
Four key themes to focus on
Rather than provide additional recommendations, the I.Lead participants gave four key themes for the education sector to focus on
1. Reduce Bullying
2. Support systems for us to grow and learn
3. Craft co-design partnerships with disabled people
4. Invest in disability awareness and inclusion training for education providers
